Class ID: 1175 - Estonian Style - Nupps and Starflowers

Teacher: Denise Bell
Class Level: Advanced
Class Type: Half Day
Class Date: Friday August 1st
Class Time: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Class Location: 8

The Estonian style of lacework involves several stitches, including nupps and starflowers, that many lace knitters are unfamiliar with or are intimidated by. Unlike a bobble, a nupp lies flat and has little surface disruption. A starflower begins with the same first step as the nupp, but rather than building inwards it blooms into an open feature. Students will see several examples of nupps and starflowers in finished projects and work on a sample swatch with nupps and starflowers.

Students Will Learn: how to properly execute nupp and starflower stitches without use of a crochet hook.

Class Prerequisites(Students should know): how to read a chart and execute the following stitches without assistance: k, p, k2tog, yo, ssk, slk2togpsso and have some lace experience.

Students Should Bring: a size 4US or 5US needle, either a circular or straights will do as long as the tips are sharp. Students should have on hand two stitch markers along with their usual knitting kit containing scissors etc.

Teacher Will Supply: butterflies of lace weight yarn; blocking pins and boards; swatch chart; Estonian lace books for viewing; completed shawls that demonstrate the stitches. If time allows class will block the small swatch they have knit during class.

Minimum Age: Not specified

Class ID: 1179 - Get The Skinny On Lace

Teacher: Denise Bell
Class Level: Intermediate
Class Type: Half Day
Class Date: Saturday August 2nd
Class Time: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Class Location: 8

While it's true that any type of yarn can be used to make lace, and that there are many wonderful works made from heavy yarns, there is something special about a lace piece made from lace weight yarn. But many knitters are lace-phobic and don't take the step towards skinny yarns. In this class you'll get the skinny on lace from a junkie, and you'll have begun a jaw-dropping lace shawl using hand-dyed lace weight merino.

Students Will Learn: chart reading as well as tips on how to knit with lace weight yarn while actually starting a lace shawl in class. Blocking will be briefly discussed as well.

Homework: Students should browse Oak Barn Merino Lace Weight yarn at www.lostcityknits.com and use the website's contact page to inform teacher of color preference no less than three days before the class. A cake will be ready for you in class.

Class Prerequisites(Students should know): how to k,p,ssk,k2tog,s1k2togpsso

Materials Fee: $30.00
*Material fees are separate from class fees and paid to the instructor the day of the class.
