Class ID: 1196 - Textured Twined Knitted Fingerless Mitts

Teacher: Beth Brown-Reinsel
Class Level: Intermediate
Class Type: All Day
Class Date: Friday August 1st
Class Time: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Class Location: 2

Learn the fascinating Swedish technique of Tvåändsstickning, or twined knitting, by creating one of a pair of fingerless mitts. This 400 year old technique creates a warm and elastic fabric that creates an embossed look with its lovely motifs. Working in the round, the techniques covered include the basics of twine knitting and purling and different motif stitches which can be used to enhance other regular knitting projects such as mittens, hats, socks and more!

Students Will Learn: how to twine knit and twine purl, how to manage the yarn, how to read a Twined Knitting chart, how to create the "O" Stitch, the Crook Stitch, the Chain Path, the asymmetrical thumb gusset with twined increases, and the Herringbone Braid-a beautiful addition to any knitting project!

Homework: Main color yarn MUST be wound into a center pull ball with the two ends accessible before class.

Class Prerequisites(Students should know): how to knit in the round on double-points, Magic Loop, or two circulars. Ability to knit in the English style is helpful, but not mandatory.

Materials Fee: $1.00
*Material fees are separate from class fees and paid to the instructor the day of the class.

Materials Fee Includes: 13 page handout and charts.

Students Should Bring: around 4 oz. light colored worsted weight yarn for two mitts (Yarn MUST be wound into a center pull ball); 1 oz. contrasting yarn of the same weight (heathers and fuzzy yarns obscure the patterns–four ply yarns show the textures best); one set of 7" long (or shorter) double pointed needles, size 4mm (US 6); tapestry needle and stitch markers, waste yarn for holding stitches, magnetic board or sticky notes for keeping one's place on the chart.

Minimum Age: 16
