Class ID: 1162 - Artfully Agitated Stripes: An Introduction to Mosaic Knitting
Teacher: Franklin Habit Class Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Class Type: Half Day Class Date: Friday August 1st Class Time: 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM Class Location: 7
At first glance, Mosaic Knitting looks like garden variety stranded color work--but it's not. Mosaic patterns are really two-row stripes, joggled here and there with slipped stitches. The result? Beautiful designs and intriguing fabrics in stockinette, garter stitch--and hybrids thereof. And amazingly--you'll never knit with more than one color in a row. Want to find out how it works, and how to design your own mosaic color patterns? Join us, and bring your imagination.
Students Will Learn: the structure and method of mosaic knitting from charts, and the rules of designing mosaic patterns.
Homework: None
Class Prerequisites(Students should know): Fluency in the basic techniques of knitting.
Students Should Bring: Yarns: Two balls of smooth (non-fuzzy), worsted-weight yarn (for example: Cascade 220, Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted, or similar) in highly contrasting solid colorways. The Estonian style of lacework involves several stitches, including nupps and starflowers, that many lace knitters are unfamiliar with or are intimidated by. Unlike a bobble, a nupp lies flat and has little surface disruption. A starflower begins with the same first step as the nupp, but rather than building inwards it blooms into an open feature. Students Will Learn: how to properly execute nupp and starflower stitches without use of a crochet hook.
Class Prerequisites(Students should know): how to read a chart and execute the following stitches without assistance: k, p, k2tog, yo, ssk, slk2togpsso and have some lace experience.
